Our Two Stops in Georgia – Brunswick and St. Catherine’s Island

Monday, May 23, we departed Fernandina Beach and headed to Brunswick Landing Marina where we had reservations for the evening. Brunswick, founded in 1771, is the second largest city on the Georgia coast. The marina was most friendly and offered many social events, such as happy hours, movie nights, etc.

This was a functional stop – fuel fill-up; pumpout; and laundry. The Great Loop blog informs you to bring $1 and $5 bills (tips for the marine hands who help you dock, etc.) and quarters for the laundry facility. I was prepared with both. However, we were pleasantly surprised there was no charge for our first laundry visit! Score! Probably won’t see that again.

Tuesday, May 24, we departed Brunswick with the intent to make it up the Georgia rivers as far as we can to be in South Carolina Wednesday. We travelled through Brunswick, Turtle, North, and Medway Rivers and passed Jekyll and Simon Islands. We stopped that evening and anchored at St. Catherine’s Island on Walburg Creek. Our handy Looper Companion Guide helped us find the anchorage. We saw another Looper boat there – Indigo – and touched base with them.

Nebo Stats for Tuesday, May 24: 8 hours 15 minutes travel; 58 kmiles; and 7.0 knots average speed – another long day for Captain Pat!

Sidney Lanier Bridge on the Turtle River- Sidney Lanier was an American musician, poet, and author who served in the Confederate States Army as a private. He became a professor of literature at John Hopkins University in Baltimore and is hailed in the South as the “poet of the Confederacy.”

  1. A very scenic trip thus far and some interesting facts about our great Sunshine State that we wouldn’t see or know otherwise. The perfect time of the year as well…….

    It appears that you got out of Florida just in time. The warning balloons and TV tower radars are all aimed at the East Atlantic. We’re told that we are about to be hit by the 100 year locust plague. They are crossing the Atlantic now and expected next Monday. and Florida will be covered from Cuba to Daytona Beach. Everyone is hoping they will eat and run and not get too comfortable.

    Now everyone thinks your tenants are brilliant having the house tented..

    We miss you at Mass. I have to take my pyx out of mothballs as our neighbor who has no use of his legs has lost his EM for the summer. A blessing!! Deacon Bill will update me on the “newbies”.

  3. Looks like a fabulous trip so far! We got married on Jekyll island and had a place there for years. Sleepy little area with great walking beaches and lots of history. Enjoy your travels!
